June Canadian Maru Household Index
The June 2023 MHOI is up 2 points from last month’s sounding to 87 (negative/pessimistic). It is the second consecutive rise of the index (up a full four points) since falling to its lowest sounding in March 2023 (83) since its inception in April 2021. For perspective, citizen-consumers have returned to where they were in January 2023.
Never expect to retire
A new Yahoo Canada/ Maru Public Opinion survey finds that three in ten (28%) currently working Canadians say they never expect to retire. No doubt for some it will be because of personal drive and the desire to keep active—but for the majority of others who believe retirement won’t come any time soon, it’s most likely because they will have to rely on an ongoing stream of income beyond government assistance to support their aging needs and lifestyle.
Homeownership dreams persist
A new Maru Public Opinion conducted for CIBC finds that despite concerns about affordability, the dream of owning a home persists as a top goal for a majority of non-homeowners (71%). That expectation is even anticipated by parents for the next generation, as two-thirds (63%) of those with children at home say they plan to help their kids with a down payment someday. As for today, many current homeowners (40% and 53% with children) may consider selling their homes when economic conditions stabilize.
The lies have it
A new Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for Simply Spiked Lemonade™ finds that the vast majority (87%) of Canadians admit having found themselves in situations where they’ve felt compelled to tell a lie of any kind, big or small. And when it comes to fessing up as to which situations in the past where they’ve downright lied or fibbed about, the top two are rejecting invites because they ''have plans'' (47%) and saying ''no problem'' when it's definitely a problem (47%).

The top three companies are eligible to use the following display to celebrate and promote this achievement*:
May Canadian Maru Household Index
The May 2023 MHOI is up 2 points to 85 (negative/pessimistic) from last month’s lowest level since tracking began in April 2021. The question is whether the current upswing is a burst or just a bubble with the increasingly negative assessment since December 2022 having been arrested with a more positive trajectory ahead, or is it just a temporary burst of vigor?
Canadian eyes examined
A new Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for FYIdoctors finds that despite a majority (83%) of Canadians choosing their vision as the most important sense they would never want to lose entirely, half as many (42%) say they visit their Optometrist for a proper eye examination only occasionally (33%) every few years or never (9%).
