June Canadian Maru Household Index

The June 2023 MHOI is up 2 points from last month’s sounding to 87 (negative/pessimistic). It is the second consecutive rise of the index (up a full four points) since falling to its lowest sounding in March 2023 (83) since its inception in April 2021. For perspective, citizen-consumers have returned to where they were in January 2023.

What’s driving the MHOI this month are mostly derived from positive views on long-term savings and the ability to purchase household necessities—outpulling negative sentiments on the state of the economy (which is still decidedly negative for upwards of two thirds of consumer-citizens) and investing, while spending and all other categories assessed are virtually stagnant.
