April Canadian Maru Household Index
The Canadian Maru Household Outlook Index (“MHOI”) is at 83 (which is negative/pessimistic because it is under the base index of 100), down two points (-2) from last month’s measure of 85. This is still well below its most recent high-water mark recorded in July 2021, when it topped 107 (which is positive/optimistic because it is over the base index of 100).
Canadians and Americans offer bilateral insights
In anticipation of the inaugural US-Canada Summit hosted by Eurasia Group and BMO Financial Group on April 4th, 2023, Maru Public Opinion and GZERO Media surveyed Canadians and Americans on attitudes towards each other and numerous bilateral issues.
National Work Happiness
Maru Public Opinion has released the first Happiness@Work Index undertaken for ADP Canada. This new monthly measure examines the happiness of Canadians in the workplace (including employees and self-employed individuals) and explores workplace satisfaction across Canada. The Index is a score of ten and will track positive or negative changes over time.
Stop foreign powers undermining democracy
TORONTO, March 23, 2023—As U.S. President Joe Biden visits Canada for the first time since taking office, the results of a new Maru Public Opinion /GZERO Media poll finds that while Canadians may think less of the improvement of the Canada/U.S. relationship than Americans do today compared to the Trump era five years ago, they near unanimous on one major potential action being a top priority: both Canadians (91%) and Americans (93%) want security and intelligence efforts boosted to stop foreign powers undermining democracy.
Home heating costs
A new Yahoo Canada/ Maru Public Opinion poll reveals that almost three quarters (72%) of Canadians who pay their home heating bills witnessed an increase in their energy consumption costs between mid-November 2022 and mid-February 2023—but it was a steeper increase for one quarter (very much 24%/somewhat 48%) of them. This compares to three in ten (28%) payors who say their costs remained relatively the same.
Homebuyers spring back
A new Maru Public Opinion conducted for Royal LePage Canada finds that more than a quarter of Canadians who put their home purchase plans on hold over the last year say they will resume their search this spring.
Canada’s most respected merchandise retail stores 2023
A survey conducted by Maru Public Opinion for Canada's Most Respected Award Program finds that Canadians have chosen Canadian Tire, Costco, and Staples as Canada’s Most Respected General Merchandise Retail Stores for 2023.
Spring vacation plans
According to a new survey undertaken by Maru Public Opinion for Scotiabank, one-quarter of Canadians (23%) are making plans for a vacation this spring, with those who are the youngest (aged 18-34, 42%) most likely to be on the move, followed by their middle-aged (35-54, 18%) and older (55+, 13%) counterparts.

The Canadian Maru Household Outlook Index (“MHOI”) is at 85 (which is negative/pessimistic because it is under the base index of 100), down two points (-2) from last month’s measure of 87. The MHOI has slumped back to where it was in October 2022 in a tie for its worst measure since the index began tracking in April 2021.
Canadians targeted by fraudsters
A new Maru Public Opinion survey provided to TD Bank Group for this year’s Fraud Prevention Month reveals that despite rising victimization by fraudsters, nearly half of Canadians have not taken any steps to make themselves well-equipped to protect themselves.
Retirement worries and no plan
A new Maru Public Opinion survey provided for CIBC finds the average age Canadians hope to retire is 61—however, six in ten (57%) of non-retirees wonder whether they’ll be able to achieve that ambition. And further to that, two-thirds (66%) of non-retirees worry about running out of money during retirement, and just four in ten (41%) feel confident they are saving enough to achieve their retirement goals.
