CANADA PUBLIC OPINION POLLS
On this page you can review our latest Canadian polls.
Snowbirds take flight
A Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for CIBC finds that despite a majority (73%) of Canadian snowbirds being concerned about the current economic environment, only a few (21%) have spoken with a financial advisor about their plans to live abroad during the winter months.
Rising interest rate impact
A new Yahoo Canada/ Maru Public Opinion poll finds one-third (35%) of homeowners with a financial encumbrance attached to their residence don’t believe they’ll be able to ride out the latest Bank of Canada prime lending rate hike to 4.50% for an average of any more than 9.7 months before they are forced to sell or vacate their home for another arrangement—less so for those with either a variable/adjustable mortgage (8.3 months) or a line of credit (8.3 months) on their home.
Side gig, side hustle bustle
A new Maru Public Opinion conducted for Turbo Tax Canada finds that one-quarter of Canadians (23%) have a side gig/hustle (a piece of work or second job they get paid for in addition to their primary employment). Of those, the vast majority (85%) say the rising cost of living contributed to their decision to pick up that secondary source of income.
Interest rate speculation
A new Yahoo Canada/ Maru Public Opinion poll finds Canadians speculating that the Bank of Canada will likely push past its new prime interest rate level of 4.50% to an average of 4.80% before meeting its goal of bringing the annual inflation rate down to two percent. But, not unexpectedly, the results also reveal a majority (57%) of Canadians aligning with the Bank’s decision to hit the pause button on any further hikes until it assesses the cumulative impact of the interest rate increases it has levied since March 2022.
Winter basketball barriers
A new Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for KFC Canada reveals that half (50%) of Canadians believe there are too many barriers preventing them from playing basketball outdoors in the winter. The results were shared as KFC brought to life KFCourt, the world’s first winterized basketball court located under one of Canada’s busiest highways, the Gardiner Expressway at The Bentway (800 Fleet Street), in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Intergenerational finances motivation
A new Maru Public Opinion survey conducted for Meridian finds that most (70%) Canadians believe their family's finances are stable. They think they’ll be okay this year, six in ten (61%) feel uncertain about their financial future, and just over half (54%) indicate they’re motivated to reset or refresh their finances.
January Canadian Maru Household Index
The January 2023 Canadian Maru Household Outlook (MHOI) Index is at 88 (negative/pessimistic), down one point from last month.
Canadians and their 2023 financial concerns, goals and priorities
The results of a Maru Public Opinion study undertaken for CIBC reveal that Canadians enter 2023 with inflation, interest rates, and low economic growth as their top personal financial concerns—and while few have sought out advice about their top financial goals/priorities, it’s the paying down/elimination of debt, keeping up with bills/getting by, and growing their investments or wealth that are their foremost intentions to do so in the year ahead.
Charitable Giving
A new Maru Public Opinion survey conducted for CIBC about charitable giving finds a majority (71%) of Canadians have contributed to charity or not-for-profit organizations since the outset of 2022
Vacation workload
The results of a new Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for ADP find that an average of three in ten (29%) working Canadians took all of their allotted vacation time in 2022, while one in six (17%) admit having taken none. The remaining majority (54%) took varying levels of vacation, including one-third (36%) who took between half and three-quarters of their allotted time.
December Canadian Maru Household Index
The December 2022 Canadian Maru Household Outlook (MHOI) Index is at 89* (negative/pessimistic), up four points from last month.
