Small Business Support

A new Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) and released today finds a majority (86%) of Canadians indicating that supporting Canadian small businesses is important to them, along with two-thirds (66%) who say they make efforts to buy from small businesses rather than ordering from large online retailers, especially as the vast majority (93%) believe small businesses are really struggling right now.

Ontario home buying

A new Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for Right at Home Realty and released today finds just under one in ten (7%) of Ontario homeowners plan to sell their home over the next year – within the next six months (4%), within the next year (3%) – with another group planning to do so within the next 2-3 years of (13%). One in five (20%) of Ontarians are open to selling their home over the next year. Alternatively, most Ontario homeowners plan to stay put for the foreseeable future (80% now compared to 77% in 2021).

Fueling not cooling a recession

A new Yahoo Canada/Maru Public Opinion survey released today finds a majority (68%) of Canadians believe the country is headed towards a recession, and most (56%) feel the central bank’s interest rate hikes will fuel, not cool, a recession.

With food (86%) and gasoline (82%) at the top of a long list of potentially month-over-month cost-sensitive items and activities that were tested; a majority (56%) of Canadians are now on a consumer diet having set stricter priorities and reduced spending in the past month due to high inflationary prices.

A new Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for French’s Ketchup finds a majority (79%) of Canadians like (55%) or love (24%) ketchup—and among those who like ketchup (78%) think it's important to buy ketchup made with 100% Canadian tomatoes.

Those likely to savor ketchup the most can be found in Atlantic Canada (85%), followed by those living in Ontario (81%), Québec (80%), Manitoba/Saskatchewan (77%), Alberta (75%), and British Columbia (73%).

Recession time

A new Yahoo Canada/Maru Public Opinion survey released today finds a majority (78%) of Canadians who believe the country is either in a recession now (55%) or headed towards one in the next three months (23%), with half (52%) of Canadians setting stricter priorities and having reduced their spending over the past month. Underpinning this recessionary view is two-thirds (62%) of Canadians believe the economy is moving on the wrong track.

A survey released today by Maru Public Opinion on behalf of Canada’s Most Respected Award program finds that of twenty-nine occupations measured, Canadians rank Paramedics as their most respected occupation. Followed by Firefighters, Nurses, Farmers, Doctors, and Pharmacists, while owners of Social Media Platforms rank dead last, behind Car Salespeople, Advertising Practitioners, and Elected Members of Parliament.

A Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for workforce management tech company Ento was released today and finds that amidst ongoing labor shortages, COVID outbreaks, and added safety requirements, a majority (54%) of HR leaders across Canada (excluding Quebec) agree that managing their workforce is more difficult than it was two years ago.

Road safety week

A Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken for safety-leading e-scooter operator Neuron Mobility was released today and finds that more than one-third (36%) of Canadians believe that roads today are less safe for pedestrians compared to five years ago. Conversely, one in five (18%) say that road safety has improved during the same time frame.

Canadian summer vacations 2022

A new Yahoo Canada/Maru Public Opinion survey released today finds that just over half (54%) of Canadians plan to take a vacation this summer. Of that group, the vast majority (73%) will do so in Canada as opposed to being out of the country (27%).

And, despite record-high prices at the gas pumps, a majority (57%) of Canada’s vacationers will be driving to and from their destination. Out of eight possible vacation experiences to choose from, those at the top of the list are taking a road trip (20%), followed by being in the great outdoors (16%), and a staycation (14%), for those who are choosing to stick close to home.

Cross border abortion rights

A new Postmedia/Maru Public Opinion survey undertaken in the past few days in both Canada and the United States found that a majority (73%) of Canadians believe a woman should be able to get an abortion if she decides she wants one no matter what the reason, this compared to just a slim majority (53%) in the United States with the same view.

While a decision by the Canadian Supreme Court in 1988 ensured that having an abortion in Canada is not limited by law, the leak of a United States Supreme Court draft opinion suggests that the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which guaranteed US federal constitutional protections of abortion rights may be overturned has sparked debate on both sides of the border.

Gas price impact

A Yahoo/Maru Public Opinion survey released today finds that two-thirds (63%) of Canadian vehicle owners/households have made, or will make, significant changes to their driving/vehicle use habits with the price at the gas pumps moving from the national average of $1.70 to $2.00. In contrast, the remaining group (37%) will not likely change their driving/vehicle use habits until the price is between $2.50 and $3.00 per liter.
