Twenty twenty-one saw the biggest jump in U.K. sales for pure electric vehicles (EVs), up a huge 76% in 2020, reaching 190,000 vehicles. This propelled the EV market share from 6.6% to 11.6 % in one year, and once any product starts to double the market share per year, momentum becomes unstoppable.

We can already see that the market is undergoing a paradigm shift, with petrol dipping below 50% share for the first time in decades during 2021. This restructuring of the automotive market is happening fast. It has been accelerated by manufacturers increasing the presence of EVs in their ranges, as well as pure EV players making more vehicles available to the U.K. market, such as Tesla, whose Model 3 delivered a surge in EV take-up when it arrived in the U.K. during the summer of 2021.
